Arthur, or Art, as he is known around the studio, took several ceramics classes in Los Angeles during high school and as an undergraduate at the University of Southern California. Art pursued a medical career and continued his interest in ceramics, as a collector of Japanese ceramics and the work of local potters when he moved to Seattle. In 1999 he took a class at Seward Park Clay Studio that rekindled his interest in clay. Art has since retired from his medical practice and has become a very active member of the studio, and president of the board of directors. He uses a handbuilding technique, learned from Barb Campbell, which allows for spontaneity and the rustic aesthetic that he values in works of clay.
