Eric Newman

Eric has been in Seattle since 1983, so it is very much his home now.  He has been at Seward Park Clay Studio since 1991, starting out as a student, moving on to become a resident artist, but also having served on the Board of Directors.

He grew up in North Carolina and in Utah, and went to college in Rhode Island (getting a degree in City Planning which he doesn’t now use).  He learned to throw in junior high, taught by his mother who had been a hobbyist potter.  She is responsible for instilling Eric’s sense of form that characterizes much of his pottery (she never saw an Asian-influenced pot she didn’t like).

Eric primarily makes beautiful functional pots; however he has also recently been exploring some sculptural forms, which are assemblages of geometric shapes that play with perceptions of balance and gravity.Eric Newman

Eric has exhibited his platters at a variety of local restaurants, been included in several group shows, and currently sells his ware, in addition to SPCS, through the ACT Theatre gift shop, StageCraft.
